How much does packaging design cost in 2026
How much does packaging design cost in 2026
It is the first question almost every brand asks, and the honest answer is that it depends on three variables: number of references, number of faces to design, and whether the brand identity has to be created first or already exists.
Ranges still help. What does not help is comparing two quotes by looking only at the final figure, because they almost never cover the same thing.
Indicative ranges in Spain
- Adapting an existing identity to one pack: between 600 and 1,500 euros.
- Full packaging design for a line of three to five references: between 2,000 and 6,000 euros.
- Brand identity plus a scalable packaging system: between 6,000 and 15,000 euros.
- Brands with international distribution, several languages and formats: above that bracket.
These are studio or professional rates with a real process behind them. Below 500 euros you normally get a template adaptation, which may be enough for a test product and is clearly not enough for a brand that has to compete on shelf.
What is usually included
Category research and shelf analysis, concept proposal, artwork on the manufacturer die line, adaptation to variants and delivery of print-ready files.
What is almost never included
- Product photography.
- Original illustration, quoted separately and often between 300 and 2,000 euros depending on scope.
- Copywriting for the pack.
- Regulatory management and validation of the legal block.
- Translations.
- Contract proofs at the printer.
- Trademark registration.
Asking about these seven items before signing avoids the awkward conversation in week eight.
The costs everyone forgets
Design is only part of what it takes to put a pack on the market. Add the die or cliche, the manufacturer minimum run, print proofs and the barcode.
A brand that budgets 2,000 euros for design and has not planned 3,000 for a minimum run ends up halfway: files ready, no product. It happens more often than you would think.
Packaging design
Working on a new pack? We design packaging with the legal block built in from the first sketch, and we deal with the printer for you.
Why the cheap option gets expensive
Badly prepared packaging does not fail on screen: it fails in production. Insufficient bleed, badly separated inks, legal copy below the required size, RGB images, rich blacks in small type.
Fixing that after a run of 5,000 units costs far more than the difference between two quotes. And the real cost is not the reprint: it is the launch that slips by two months.
What pushes the price up
- Number of references and variants.
- Number of faces and different formats (jar, carton, display, shipping box).
- Languages.
- Urgency, usually a surcharge of between 15 and 30 per cent.
- Number of revision rounds included.
- Scope of the rights assignment.
How to ask for a quote and get a closed figure
Send these five things and any serious studio will give you a price instead of a range:
- The manufacturer die line, in vector format.
- Number of references and variants planned, including next year.
- Materials and finishes considered, or the printer quote if you have it.
- Whether the brand identity exists or has to be created.
- The date artwork has to reach the printer.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to commission all references at once?
Considerably. The conceptual work happens once and the variants are resolved on top of the system. Commissioning references one at a time usually costs between 30 and 50 per cent more overall.
What is the difference between hourly and fixed-price quotes?
A fixed price moves the risk to the studio and gives you certainty; it normally includes a defined number of rounds. Hourly is more flexible but needs trust and monitoring.
Does the price include editable files?
Not always. It is a point to agree in writing, together with the rights assignment and the right to modify the work.
